Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

Stereotactic Radiosurgery in Tucson

The Latest Technology for Treating Brain Tumors

Brain tumors can be overwhelming. But there is hope. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is the latest technology for treating brain tumors. Our highly skilled medical professionals at Radiant Oncology are experts in this life-saving treatment.

What is stereotactic radiosurgery?

Stereotactic radiosurgery is a highly precise form of radiation therapy that uses multiple converging beams to target tumors with great accuracy. This allows us to spare the healthy brain tissue surrounding the tumor.

The goal of SRS is to destroy the tumor while sparing healthy tissue. SRS is an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day. SRS can be used to treat melanoma brain metastases and brain tumors that have come back after surgery or radiation therapy.

Benefits of Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) offers many benefits over traditional radiation therapy, including:

  • More precise radiation therapy
  • Fewer side effects
  • Reduced treatment time
  • Outpatient procedure

Cancer Treatment Just Got More Precise

Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is a cutting-edge cancer treatment that offers many potential benefits for patients. IGRT can help improve the precision and accuracy of radiation delivery, which can lead to better outcomes and fewer side effects.

IGRT radiation therapy adds an extra layer of precision to this already effective treatment by allowing our physicians to see the tumor’s location immediately before each radiation therapy session. This way, we can ensure that the tumor is in the treatment field and that the surrounding healthy tissue is not being exposed to unnecessary radiation.

The Process We Use

1

Treatment Plan

The first step is to create a treatment plan. This involves imaging scans (CT or MRI) mapping the tumor and the surrounding healthy tissue. Once the tumor has been located, our team of radiation oncologists, neurosurgeons, and medical physicists will work together to develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific situation.

2

SRS Treatment

The next step is to begin the SRS treatment. This usually takes place over one or five days. The patient will be lying on a table during the treatment while a machine delivers the radiation to the tumor during the treatment. The entire process is non-invasive and takes about an hour.

3

Releasing You Back to Life

After the treatment is complete, you will be able to go home and resume your normal activities. There is no need for a hospital stay or any special care after the procedure. Our team will follow up with you to make sure that the tumor is shrinking and that there are no side effects from the treatment.
