How It Works
Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is a type of radiation therapy that uses high doses of radiation to target cancerous tumors. This allows for a more targeted approach to treatment, which can help minimize side effects and improve outcomes.
SBRT is delivered using a linear accelerator with precise on-board image guidance (IGRT) and the ability to monitor for movement during treatment with surface guidance (SGRT). The exact dose and duration of treatment will vary depending on the type and stage of the cancer being treated.
Most courses of SBRT consist of three to five treatments given every other day over one to two weeks. When used as part of an overall treatment plan, SBRT can effectively treat cancer in a shorter time, maximizing cure and tumor control while minimizing the risk of long-term side effects.
Conditions Treated
SBRT is an effective treatment for many types of cancer, including cancers of the brain, spine, lung, and liver. In addition, it can be used to treat tumors that are difficult to reach with surgery or are located in sensitive areas where surgery is not an option.
SBRT can also treat recurrent tumors that have not responded to other treatments. In some cases, SBRT may be combined with other treatments, such as chemotherapy or surgery.
What to Expect
When you arrive for your SBRT treatment, you will be greeted by our friendly staff. We understand that this can be a difficult and anxious time, so we will do everything we can to make you comfortable.
Before your treatment begins, you will meet with your radiation oncologist to discuss the details of your treatment plan. Once everything is ready, you will be taken to the treatment room and positioned on the therapy table. The machine will then deliver the radiation beam, and the treatment will be completed in just a few minutes. Afterward, you can return home and resume your normal activities.
There is no need for a hospital stay or recovery period, and side effects are typically mild. Some patients report feeling fatigued or having skin irritation at the treatment site, but these effects usually resolve shortly after treatment is completed.
